In the 19th century, what were called the Peelers came into being. These were not pole dancers in exotic clubs, but the forerunners of the present day police force in England.
The name was obtained from the man who formed them Sir Robert Peel, the Home Secretary who was responsible for law and order in the country at that time.
The word “Bobby” also comes from the said Robert Peel. That politican was also later to be Prime Minister, one of the Prime Ministers of England in the 19th century.
The force so formed lead evenually to the present policeman of modern Britain.
Crime was high and the said force of Peelers lead the way to control of the city streets, the city being London. The dark and fearful place so well illustrated in the books of Charles Dickens.
The writer is associated with the poverty and more living conditions of that century, and illustrates more than any other perhaps the haves and the have nots of his time.
The overcrowding in the city of London, the health problems, and the grime associated with lack of care and welbeing of the populace, until the Public Health acts came into being.
It was a John Snow who discovered the cause of Cholera for instance, realising it was the water from a well which had caused the epidemic which killed many not the mist in the atmosphere. But then it was not until the 20th century and the Clean Air Acts which stopped the London Smog which caused so many to die in the 1950’s due to chest diseases.
Life in big cities was not also so clean and full of wine bars.

The other day I attend a gathering concerned

with encouraging education.  The day saw alot of

rain.  Trying to keep out of the rain, I keep on a bus

alittle longer thanSnow necessary, hoping to get delivered

to the door of the building I was visiting.  But

was forced to go right to the back of the bus, could not

get pass two people with alot of shopping bags,

so I ended up going about half and mile further than

necessary and walking back.

The stories of some of those being nominated for

the Niace awards reflect much frustration, yet much

motivation, two steps forward , back and forth

keeping the idea fresh  in the mind.

Most people think that education starts and finishes

with school, but some individuals due to circumstances

have to keep going far longer, some because they

love knowledge , some because they need the solace

some for the future of their families.Mostly all

of these reasons.  Energy and education are not

gifts that are wasted in time, but mature and rippen.

The severe weather rain and snow cause problems to#

be overcome, the snow especially gives pleasure in

regard to the sights and sounds of the season.

Walking in the city, the snow falling in large

flakes, the sound of  chimes playing carols in the

distance, the lights of the local civic building glowing

in blue light and a christmas tree, its lights sparkling

in the dark.  These energise the soul and suggest that

flourishing of the community via the strength of the

imagination and human spirit.

A bus took me home, the roads were covered  with

snow and ice, all of us on that  bus watch the weather

and the driver and the other cars, fearfully.

Yet the driver  got us there, despite the warnings#

on his radio about closed roads and vehicles stuck i

the snow.  A driver everyone thanked gratefully.

A little support and kind words went ago way.
